C for Cutler

P. CUTLER Grain and Feed Store

Pincus Cutler (1874-1940) was one of the first Jewish settlers in Colchester.  He settled on a farm in the North Westchester part of town in 1895 and moved to the center of Colchester in 1908, when he began operating a general store. In 1922, he started his own business known as P. Cutler, Inc. with inventory that included flour, grain, feed, coal, and lumber.

He was active in the civic, religious, charitable and communal life of Colchester. He died suddenly on April 16, 1940, and his son Samuel continued operating the business until 1959.  At that time, Yantic Grain and Products company bought P. Cutler, Inc. and Samuel stayed on to help them during the transition period.

The photo below from Colchester in the 1940’s shows P. Cutler’s name on the side of the building. The store was located at corner of Lebanon Avenue and Mill Street, in the area where S&S Worldwide is today.
