EYEGLASSES FROM 1865

The eyeglasses below are in the collection of the Colchester Historical Society and are most likely Windsor glasses (named after the Duke of Windsor), who popularized this style in the 19th century. Known for their round lenses and metal rims, Windsor glasses were often associated with sophistication and elegance. Made by hand in small workshops by craftsmen for those who had vision impairments, the process involved several steps and a variety of materials. Their precise work ensured a comfortable and secure fit.

Lenses were typically made from glass, which was ground and shaped into small circles that would fit into the frame. Shape and thickness of the lenses varied depending on a persons eyesight.

Screws or rivets joined the temples and frame of eyeglasses together. The temples, which rested on the ears, were commonly made to match the frame. They were usually hinged to allow for folding and easy storage.
