K for Knights of Pythias

KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS

The  Knights of Pythias was founded on the values of Friendship, Charity, and Benevolence based on the legend of the friendship of “Damon and Pythias”. It was founded in Washington, DC, on February 19, 1864, by Justus H. Rathbone. A great many members were Civil War Veterans, and Royal Emmons of Colchester was one of the veterans who was commemorated by the Pythians.

The Knights of Pythias of Colchester met in the building you see in the photograph above. It was located on Norwich Avenue not far from the corner of Hayward Avenue.  In 1964, The Colchester Bible Baptist Church had their first service in the Knights of Pythias Hall.
