O for Owaneco

OWANECO

(1640-1712)

Owaneco was the eldest son of the Mohegan sachem Uncas, and was named after Uncas’ father (Uncas' likeness is shown to the right in a painting created by David Wagner).

By 1684, after the death of Uncas, Owaneco became of the sachem of the Mohegan tribe.

In 1698, Nathaniel Foote purchased land from Owaneco at a point just north of the present Town Green, at Jeremiah’s Farm that became the Town of Colchester

Later Owaneco fought for Mohegan autonomy from colonial control and in 1704, sent a complaint to Queen Anne of England beginning a long-running case against the Colony of Connecticut.

By 1710, Owaneco’s son Cesar Uncas became the sachem of the Mohegans, and Owaneco died in 1712.
